Today on Dry Powder we talk with Erik Hirsch, the co-CEO of Hamilton Lane, about private market infrastructure. As head of a solutions provider for general partners, limited partners, and high-net-worth individuals, Erik has a unique vantage point on the private equity industry, and for the first time in his career, he’s beginning to see these varied types of investors converge on the same set of technologies. In doing so, they might also converge on the need for similar service levels.

“Good technology tends to flow broadly,” Erik says. “It doesn’t tend to stay constrained, and if there are tools and access points and transaction methods and fund structures and things on your phone that are appealing to one set of people, they are likely going to be appealing to all sets of people.”

In today’s episode, I ask Erik to take us to the bleeding edge of private market infrastructure, from smartphone-friendly interfaces to daily pricing updates. I also ask Erik how quickly this infrastructure could divide GPs, between those who can build it and those who could get left behind.

“It feels to me like we’ve been cruising along for decades at the exact same speed,” Erik says, “and someone just pushed the warp-speed button.”
